Actor Sterling K. Brown Explains Why He Shows His Children on Social Media for Their Safety

Actor Sterling K. Brown recently offered a compelling perspective on why he chooses to feature his children on social media platforms, citing safety concerns that differ significantly from those of other celebrity parents.

During a conversation on the Armchair Expert podcast, the 49-year-old performer discussed his approach to protecting his two sons, Andrew, 14, and Amaré, 10, whom he shares with wife Ryan Michelle Bathe.

Host Dax Shepard had mentioned his own strategy of concealing his daughters’ faces on social media to allow them anonymity and the freedom to make mistakes without public scrutiny. Shepard and his wife Kristen Bell keep their children Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 11, out of the public eye online.

Brown acknowledged understanding this viewpoint but revealed his reasoning for taking an opposite approach. The Emmy-nominated actor explained that racial considerations play a crucial role in his decision-making process.

“Your children are obviously white. My children are Black,” Brown stated during the podcast. “I feel like the more I put them on social, the safer they are. Any proximity that Black boys can have to some sort of celebrity or access or whatnot. I’m trying to make sure they make it home.”

The This Is Us star elaborated on his family’s boundaries regarding public interactions. When attending private events or outings, Brown maintains strict guidelines about photography and fan interactions.

According to the actor, his family operates under a no-pictures policy during personal time. He emphasized that his children deserve normal experiences without constant public attention simply because their parents work in entertainment.

“We go to an event, where you specifically know you’re taking pictures, that’s all their thing,” Brown explained. “But like if I’m at a soccer game or anything, I’ll be like, ‘Right now I’m just a dad, but I appreciate the love.'”

The actor’s candid remarks sparked significant discussion online, with many people reflecting on the different challenges faced by families of various racial backgrounds in the public eye.

Children’s Perspective on Fame

In a separate recent interview, Brown shared insights about how his sons view his celebrity status. The Paradise star revealed that his children have become accustomed to seeing their father’s image on billboards and in media, showing little excitement about his professional achievements.

Brown noted that while he still finds his success exciting, his children remain largely unimpressed. His younger son maintains some admiration for his father’s career, but his teenage son keeps any respect he might have well-hidden.

The actor described how his 14-year-old understands his father’s accomplishments but would never openly acknowledge them, maintaining the typical teenage attitude of casual indifference toward parental achievements.

Brown’s perspective highlights the complex considerations celebrity parents must navigate, particularly when racial dynamics intersect with public visibility and child safety concerns.
